Alia Bhatt turns down Resul Pookutty’s film

There is no truth to reports claiming that Alia Bhatt will be starring in Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s Piharwa.

A source close to Alia told this writer, “She is struggling to complete her three films on the floor and not signing anything new until she sorts out the dates issues among Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Rajamouli’s RR and Ayan Mukerjee’s Brahmastra.”

However the source admits that she had been approached. “Resul did ask Alia about this project. But she turned it down without a second thought. Ek toh Resul is not directing it. One of his assistants is. If Resul had been directing it, Alia may have considered it. Right now, Alia is too consumed by her three films on the floor to get into a project she isn’t fully convinced about.”

Madam Chief Minister: Richa Chadha unveils her look as an 'untouchable, unstoppable force' in this political drama

The makers of Richa Chadha starrer Madam Chief Minister unveiled the teaser poster of the anecdotal political drama directed by Subhash Kapoor. With the fierce actress playing the protagonist in the film set in UP, the film is about a woman who choose to debunk the men and society, that tried to shackle, demean and defeat her.

Richa Chadha took to her Twitter handle to unveil the teaser poster and wrote, "Glad to present to you all, my new movie #MadamChiefMinister, a political drama about an 'untouchable' who hustles and makes it big in life! Out in cinemas on 22nd January! Stay tuned!"

Madam Chief Minister also features Saurabh Shukla, Manav Kaul, Akshay Oberoi and Shubhrajyoti in pivotal roles.

A Kangra Talkies production, written & directed by Subhash Kapoor, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Naren Kumar & Dimple Kharbanda is set to release in cinemas on 22nd January 2021.

Meanwhile, Richa Chadha was last seen on screen in the recently released film Shakeela.

Despite flight ban, Shabana Azmi flies off to London for a shoot

London, in case you haven’t noticed, is under lockdown again after the upsurge of a new strain of the Covid. Flights between India and UK stand cancelled. Shabana Azmi who was committed to doing an international project in London almost cancelled her plans.

“Because of the new Covid upsurge there was no way I could reach London from Mumbai. So until the last minute I was sure I’d have to cancel. Then with great difficulty I managed to find a way to reach London via Dubai. I am flying from Delhi to Dubai where I’ve to take an overnight break. In Dubai I’ll have to get all my Covid tests done again. Only when I’m declared all-clear would I be allowed to fly to London from Dubai,” Shabana told me just before taking off from Delhi.

Speaking of her travel travails the super-talented actress says normal seems far away. “We all hoped 2021 would see things back to normal. But that’s just not happening. We are a long way off from normalcy. To work under Covid guidelines in very difficult. But we have to get back to our jobs now. There’s no other option,” Shabana sighed before flying off.

Aditya Chopra's big fallout with Prithviraj director Chandraprakash Dwivedi after Ram Setu announcement!

Not all's well in the YRF contingent as of now. Aditya Chopra who values loyalty as a prime attribute in his associates has had a major fallout with Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the director of his next magnum opus Prithviraj. Everything was hunky dory till Dwivedi unceremoniously decided to make a big announcement without informing Adi.

Adi runs Yash Raj Films more like a talent management agency with his own group of actors and directors whom he values and trusts the most. While Chandraprakash had been struggling to find a producer for Prithviraj Chauhan's story, it was the YRF scion who came to his rescue. While the shoot of the Akshay Kumar starrer is already complete, what irked Adi was Dwivedi's Ram Setu announcement. A source tells us, "Dwivedi discussed the Ram Setu script with Akshay Kumar who liked it and he immediately shot a poster and made the announcement official. He never bothered to speak to Adi, despite the latter roping him in as the newest talent in the YRF directors' department. So he got upset and fired Chandraprakash."

Aditya Chopra has also decided to cut Dwivedi from the post production duties of Prithviraj. "He won't be involved in the editing of the Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar starrer anymore. His name will definitely be there in the director's credits but Adi has decided to sit on the edit himself. He is deeply hurt by what Dwivedi did." Now, we need to see if anything can get them to patch up!

OMG! Akshay Kumar's estimated earnings over the past 6 years is nearly Rs. 1,744 crores

Akshay Kumar has over the years proved that he is one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood. With each of the actor’s films making it big at the domestic and overseas box office, Akshay has emerged as a leader in terms of revenue generated from films. Now, with 2020 coming to a close we at Bollywood Hungama decided to take a look at Kumar’s earnings over the past six years as revealed by American business magazine Forbes.

Starting with the year 2020, Akshay Kumar managed to rake in a staggering USD 48.5 million [Rs. 356.57 cr.] which despite the Covid-19 pandemic was rather good. Interestingly, Kumar’s business model for films includes his remuneration and sometimes a percentage of the film’s profits in the capacity of the actor and/or the producer. This method ensures that the actor ends up with a meaty chunk of revenue. Though 2020 was rather profitable for Akshay Kumar, it was 2019 which was one of the actor’s best years. With 5 films viz. Kesari, Blank (special appearance), Mission Mangal, Housefull 4, and Good Newwz, and not to forget his multiple brand endorsement deals, Akshay managed to earn USD 65 million [Rs. 459.22 cr.].

The years prior to 2019, Akshay Kumar’s earnings were USD 40.5 million [Rs. 277.06 cr] in 2018, USD 35.5 million [Rs. 231.06 cr] in 2017, USD 31.5 million [Rs. 211.58 cr] in 2016 and USD 32.5 million [Rs. 208.42 cr] in 2015.

Overall, looking at the cumulative amount over the past six years, Akshay Kumar has earned an estimated USD 253.5 million [Rs. 1744 cr]!

Janhvi Kapoor to start shooting for the Hindi adaptation of Kolamaavu Kokila in Punjab

Janhvi Kapoor will start the New Year with the shooting of the Hindi adaptation of the Tamil film, Kolamaavu Kokila directed by Sidharth Sengupta. Reportedly, the young actor will fly to Punjab and shoot over there in a bio bubble.

The film will go on floors on January 9 and will be shot in 45 days. As per reports, the Hindi adaptation will not be a frame-to-frame adaptation of the original. The original film starred Nayanthara in the lead which will now be reprised by Janhvi.

Janhvi will be seen playing the role of a simple North Indian girl from middle-class family. Her character will be donning minimal makeup and wearing salwar-kurtas and braids. It is also a coming-of-age movie of a girl who gets trapped in an extraordinary situation and saves her family.

Kangana Ranaut reacts to charges of merging Mumbai flats; says BMC is harassing her

Recently, a civil court in Mumbai stated that actor Kangana Ranaut had committed grave violation in the plan while merging her flats. Reacting to the news, the actress denied the statement in the ruling and said that the flat was such when she had purchased it.

In a tweet reacting to a news report, Kangana said that the building was constructed in such a way that there is one apartment on each floor and it was like this when she purchased it. “Fake propaganda by Mahavinashkari government, I haven't joined any flats, whole building is built the same way, one apartment each floor, that's how I purchased it, @mybmc is only harassing me in the entire building. Will fight in higher court," Kangana wrote on Twitter.

In September last year, the BMC had demolished parts of Kangana's office in Bandra citing illegal construction. Following this demolition, Kangana Ranaut had filed a petition seeking a restraint on the demolition being carried out by the civic body.

In the recent ruling by the civil court, Judge LS Chavan cited that in order to merge her three flats on the fifth floor of a 16-storey building, Kangana covered the sunk area, duct area, common passage and converted the free Floor Space Index (FSI) into habitable area. This as per the ruling, were grave violations of the building plan.

Exhibitor Associations across India write to Salman Khan requesting mega theatrical release of Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai on Eid 2021

The cinema halls in India were the first to shut shop when the number of COVID-19 cases in the country saw a rise in March, 2020. By mid-March, every theatre in the country had to stop functioning. While unlock India started in June, the theatres were allowed to re-open only in mid-October. Some of the states are yet to permit the re-opening of cinema halls. However, despite the reopening of cinema halls, it has not managed to get sufficient footfall.

During the pandemic, many single screen theatres had to shut down permanently because of the losses incurred. Now, several exhibitor associates from across the country, wrote a letter to superstar Salman Khan to release his upcoming film Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai in every theatre in India to boost business. Salman Khan has been the king of box-office and every film of his earns 100s of crores. Exhibitors in the letter said they believe that Radhe will bring back the audience to the theatres and help them climb out of their financial strains.

In the letter addressed to Salman, they wrote, “As you are aware, 2020 has been a rough year for millions of people across the country & the ones associated with India's film exhibition sector haven't been an exception. Over the last 10 months, hundreds of single screen/ Independent cinemas have pulled down their shutters permanently & this has resulted in the loss of livelihood for lakhs of people who were employed by them directly & indirectly.”

“Films are to theatres what fuel is to a car. Without a constant supply of content that is relevant to its audience, running a cinema hall is close to impossible. For over a decade now, your films have played an important role in bringing audiences to single screen cinemas, which are otherwise starved for content that caters to the sensibilities of people who patronize them,” they added.

“Your film Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai is among the few that are capable of resurrecting the fortunes of independent / single screen cinemas across the country. A film like that, if released widely can give not just financial support & relief, but also a ray of hope to owners & employees of theatres in the context of their future. We request you to plan the film's release at every cinema in the country on Eid 2021, as there cannot be a better idea than that for us film exhibitors & more importantly for millions of your fans, whom we cannot wait to welcome back at the theatres,” the wrote requesting the actor for a mega release of Radhe.

Ranveer Singh - Deepika Padukone joining the Kapoor for holiday wasn't planned

For those who are wondering what Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are doing with the Kapoors, Ranbir and family, in anything-but-boring Ranthambore, here is the inside story.

Says a source in the know, “Ranbir, Alia and their families had planned their holiday in Ranthambore for NewYears months in advance. Alia ran into Deepika in the last week of December and they began chatting on holiday plans for the New Year. That’s when they got to know that both of them were heading to the same destination for New Year’s.”

However Ranveer and Deepika are not spending time at Ranthambore as one big family with the Kapoors. “Ranveer and Deepika are on their own. Pictures on the social media are giving the wrong impression of the couple clasped to the Kapoors for the vacation. That’s not the way it is. Deepika can never be comfortable around Ranbir’s mother. She was never made to feel welcome when she was seeing Ranbir,” a mutual friend of Alia and Deepika told me.

Court rejects Kangana Ranaut’s plea; states that she committed grave violations of plan while merging flats

A while back Kangana Ranaut made headlines when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished a part of her office space in Bandra. Following this demolition, Kangana Ranaut had filed a petition seeking a restraint on the demolition being carried out by the civic body. Now, in a ruling that was made available on Thursday a civil court has rejected Ranaut’s plea, while stating that the actress had committed grave violation in the plan while merging her falts.

As per the court’s decision, Judge LS Chavan cited that in order to merge her three flats on the fifth floor of a 16-storey building, Kangana covered the sunk area, duct area, common passage and converted the free Floor Space Index (FSI) into habitable area. This as per the ruling, were grave violations of the building plan.

Though the court has now ruled that intervention is no longer required in this case, Kangana Ranaut has been given a period of six weeks to approach the Bombay High Court against the order.

John Abraham – Emraan Hashmi starrer Mumbai Saga acquired by Amazon Prime?

The John Abraham – Emraan Hashmi starrer Mumbai Saga has been making news since director Sanjay Gupta announced the venture. The film which wrapped up shooting before the pandemic lockdown has been in the post production stage for a while. Now, we hear that the makers of Mumbai Saga have decided to release the film directly on OTT and have in fact locked a deal with the streaming giant Amazon Prime Video.

As per reports, Mumbai Saga has been acquired by Amazon Prime Video for a staggering amount, the likes of which have not been seen till date. Claims a well-placed industry source, “Amazon has shelled out an amount in high double digit figures to acquire Mumbai Saga, which has now made the film one of, if not the most costly acquisition of recent times.” Ask the source for more details on the price and whether the deal between Amazon and the makers of Mumbai Saga has been signed and he adds, “Talks are still on, but the moneys are on the table and the makers of the film are pretty happy with the offer. All that remains now is to thresh out the promotion details and sign the dotted line.”

While an official announcement of the acquisition is awaited, the grapevine states that Amazon Prime Video will soon be adding the film to its catalogue and will commence promotion of the same as well.

As for the film itself, Mumbai Saga is a period gangster flick set in the 80s that will show the transition from Bombay to Mumbai. It is a Gulshan Kumar presentation, and is backed by T-Series and White Feather Films production. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Sangiita Ahir and Anuradha Gupta Mumbai Saga, is directed by Sanjay Gupta.

A while back we had reported that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was re-starting his ambitious project Heera Mandi. In fact, we had also reported that the project would be for an OTT platform and that it would be directed by SLB’s assistant Vibhu Puri. Now we hear that the project will feature some of the strongest and most powerful actresses of today.

While Alia Bhatt has been finalized others in serious consideration or on the verge of finalization are Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra, Manisha Koirala, and Vidya Balan.

A source reveals, “Sanjay is personally doing the casting. Though officially his former assistant Vibhu Puri is going to direct Heera Mandi, SLB’s stamp will be evident in every frame.”

Heera Mandi deals with the hidden culture of the red light area in the walled city of Lahore. It focuses on the women who live there and for whom sex is a job.

Santosh Sivan's next with Vikrant Massey and Vijay Sethupathi gets a title

Ace cinematographer and filmmaker Santoshan Sivan will be directing Vikrant Massey and Vijay Sethupathi in his next. The film has been titled Mumbaikar. The film also stars Tanya Maniktala, Hridhu Haroon, Sanjay Mishra, Ranvir Shorey and Sachin Khedekar in pivotal roles.

Mumbaikar is the remake of the 2017 Tamil action thriller, Maanagaram which was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. This film will make Vijay Sethupathi's debut in Hindi cinema. The actor who was initally supposed to star in Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha,backed out of the project. According to producer Shibu Thameens, Massey will be seen playing a young angry man in the film, a role that is completely different from anything that he has done so far.
